More information about the Education resource pack

Aims of the pack

The pack aims to help children and young people learn more about:
  • safety and the risks of a victim, for instance strategies for understanding, assessing and minimising risk
  • the experience of being a victim or witness to a crime (for instance how a victim feels, what support they might need, and what coping strategies they could use)
  • support for victims and witnesses (for instance sources of support, including Victim Support, what we offer and how to access our services)
  • being a victim or witness.

By developing children and young people's knowledge of these topics the pack contributes positively to children and young people's wellbeing.

  • Children and young people will be better equipped to cope with crime and being a victim or a witness.
  • Children and young people will have strategies to help support one another if affected by crime.
  • Children and young people will be better able to access effective support if affected by crime.
We hope the pack will also contribute to enhancing children and young people's safety.
  • Children and young people will be able to use strategies to keep themselves safer and reduce future victimisation.
  • Children and young people will feel safer.
  • Children and young people will be more likely to develop positive relationships and choose not to bully or engage in offending behaviour.
These outcomes also contribute towards the aims of:
  • Every Child Matters
  • the National Curriculum, particularly the personal, social and health education (PHSE) and citizenship requirements for Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Healthy Schools
  • Extended Schools.

How is the pack designed?

Victim Support's Education resource pack has six modules covering topics. Each module is divided into two age appropriate session plans:
  • a Key Stage 2 session plan for children aged 7-11
  • a Key Stage 3 session plan for children aged 11-14.

The modules are:

  • Victims and witnesses
  • Bullying
  • Hate crime
  • Healthy relationships
  • Personal safety
  • Street crime.

There is also a suite of online activities which has been designed to complement the pack which can be used in a classroom setting or by young people on their own.

Who should use the pack?

The two session plans in each module are targeted at adults working with children and young people, for example teachers, youth workers and Victim Support workers.

The sessions are flexible and you can use parts or all of them to fit in with your own work with children and young people. They can also be used in conjunction with other educational resources.

The sessions provide an opportunity to build on the work Victim Support has already done in raising awareness of criminal victimisation with children and young people.

Victim Support workers who would haven't facilitated workshops with children and young people or who would like a refresher should get hold of a copy of the Education resource pack starter pack (available to Victim Support staff and volunteers from Victim Support's extranet).

Where can the pack be used?

You could use part or all of the sessions in the classroom, assemblies, after-school clubs, and youth clubs.

The pack has been designed for use in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It may also be useful in other countries.
